Demystifying the 5-Day SSB Interview Architecture
Candidates qualifying the written test receive a call-up for the rigorous 5-day Services Selection Board (SSB) interview, conducted at dedicated selection centers (Bhopal, Prayagraj, Bengaluru, Kapurthala, Gandhinagar, Dehradun, Coimbatore):
- Day 1 (Screening): Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test followed by Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT). Candidates write a story based on a hazy image, narrate it individually, and participate in a group discussion. Only screened-in candidates remain for Stage II.
- Day 2 (Psychological Tests): Includes Thematic Apperception Test (TAT - 11 ambiguous pictures + 1 blank slide), Word Association Test (WAT - 60 words, 15 seconds each), Situation Reaction Test (SRT - 60 real-life dilemmas in 30 minutes), and Self Description Test (SDT).
- Day 3 & Day 4 (GTO Tasks): The Group Testing Officer evaluates outdoor group dynamics via Progressive Group Task (PGT), Half Group Task (HGT), Military Planning Exercise (GPE), Snake Race, Lecturette, and Command Task.
- Personal Interview: Conducted by the Interviewing Officer (IO) exploring your family background, academic track record, sports achievements, and socio-political awareness.

The 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs)
The SSB psychological system does not search for encyclopedic knowledge; it measures your innate potential across 15 well-defined Officer Like Qualities divided into four psychological factors:
- Factor I (Planning and Organizing): Effective Intelligence, Reasoning Ability, Organizing Ability, Power of Expression.
- Factor II (Social Adjustment): Social Adaptability, Cooperation, Sense of Responsibility.
- Factor III (Social Effectiveness): Initiative, Self Confidence, Speed of Decision, Ability to Influence the Group, Liveliness.

Armed Forces Medical Standards and Physical Conditioning
Recommended candidates proceed to the Special Medical Board (SMB). Common reasons for temporary medical rejection include being overweight, carrying angles beyond permissible limits, ear wax, DNS (deviated nasal septum), and dental points below 14. Begin building physical conditioning months before the SSB: establish a routine of running 2.4 kilometers within 15 minutes, 20 push-ups, and 6–8 pull-ups daily.
